It is a SUPER DEAL.

CAR RENTAL NEWS: $21 a day bid (compact car) using PRICELINE.com was accepted. If $21 fails - select economy car - $22 a day bid.

FLIGHT NEWS: Many flights are listed at $780-$850 RT New York - OGG. United's prices to (OGG airport) Maui, HI was in the $900 range as of early June.

Aloha! Before you book your flight, you should know the different airport options in Maui.

Important Advice: There are 2 airports in Maui. (Kahului OGG and Kapalua JHM)

Kahului (OGG) airport is the big airport in Maui. *But if you are only staying in the Ka'anapali, Lahaina, Kapalua area then you should fly to Honolulu first and then transfer to the (smaller/closer) Kapalua airport. The connection flight from Honolulu to either Kahului or Kapalua is approx 25 mins. A relatively short flight.

Because we are traveling during the slow/off season - round trip airfare NYC/NEWARK to Honolulu or Maui is between $600-$800. Check out EXPEDIA for flight information. All eligible flights/fares to Maui should be published by May 2008. You might even want to consider doing a PRICELINE.com bid over the Summer. You could save over $150 bucks on the flight!

Welcome to paradise!

Check out the following for a complete Maui Road Map and an interactive website.

Caution: 'Kapalua' is a very small airport, it does not have any landing lights. Therefore, most car rental companies close by 5 PM (the last free car rental shuttle to this airport is 4:30 PM). For safety reasons, the last flight in/out of this small airport must arrive/depart before dark. If your plane is delayed for any reason in Honolulu then you will be re-routed to the bigger airport (Kahului Aiport aka OGG).

Kahului Airport is located approx. 45 minutes from the Ka'anapali, Lahaina, Kapalua area. If you originally reserved your rental car for Kapalua pick up, you can still pick up your car at Kahului. The car rental staff at Kahului will tell you the drop off surcharge is $40 but you do not have to pay for it later as long as you let your rental car representative know in Kapalua upon your return. See below for additional Kahului Airport information.

Kahului Aiport (OGG) is the largest airport on the island. If you are staying in Makena or Wailea then you should fly here. You will see familiar things like McDonalds, Walmart, Kmart, Costco and Panda Express in the Kahului area. The 45 mins drive from Kahului is really not that bad but it can be a little challenging at night.

Hana Airport: Do not fly into this remote airport. It is very far away from the other parts of Maui.

If you are using your frequet flyer miles or if you are staying in Honolulu (Walkiki Beach) for a few days first then you will need to purchase a connection flight from Honolulu to Maui. Island Airline and Go Airline are 2 small airline carriers that offer flights to and from Honolulu. Those two airlines also have flights to the other islands. The rate is between $35-$80 each way and you should choose the earlier flights to ensure seating.

Tranportation & Car Rental: You should rent a car in Maui. The reason is because it is very difficult to get anywhere without a car. There are taxis & public buses available but having a car is essential in Maui.

  • Limo pickup at the airport. Contact your hotel and they should be able to make the necessary transporation arrangements for you. The estimated cost from OGG to Maui hotel is approx. $60-$70 (One way). That is not bad if there are at least 2 of you. If you are staying in the Ka'anapali or Lahaina area then you should fly to the (JHM) Kapalua Airport. The taxi ride is cheaper.

  • Since there are other guests staying in Maui, catching a 'FREE' ride to the wedding on Oct 14th should not be a problem. Just be sure to let us know ahead of time so we can make the necessary arrangements for you.

Try expedia.com or priceline.com for the lowest possible car rental rates. Money Saving Tip: RSVP the cheapest car possible ($20-$25 a day). The reason is because you can always request an upgrade later at the airport. If you absolutely want a 'convertible' in Maui then you should rsvp it from the start. The gas prices are relative to the mainland.

  • As of June 23, 2008 (Got Compact Car) Priceline.com bid for $21 a day was taken.

Safety first - Don't drink and drive!
